Chapter 26 - JUNE’S FAMILY DINNER

June married at twenty-nine.

No giant Mafia wedding.

Medium-sized.

Loud.

Too much food.

At her first Christmas hosting, she insisted everyone clear one thing from the table.

Voluntarily.

My cousin Carlo complained:

“Guests don’t clear plates.”

June answered:

“Then sit there.”

He helped.

Rosalie carried two glasses.

I carried a roasting pan.

Luca stacked napkins badly.

No staff shortage.

The professional kitchen team handled the real work.

Family helped because we wanted to finish earlier and open gifts.

Service without rank.

Beatrice had always claimed that would destroy tradition.

Instead it made dinner nicer.
