Chapter 3 - Why Everyone Believed Thomas Was DeadThomas Hale disappeared when Emma was nineteen.

Not dramatically.
He left the United States after a bitter business dispute and gradually severed contact.
At first he sent letters.
Then emails.
Then nothing.
Years later, investigators hired by the family found no reliable activity connected to him.
After the statutory process and repeated searches, a court eventually declared him dead.
Emma hated that phrase.
Declared dead.
It sounded like paperwork had killed him.
She grieved anyway.
Her mother had already died years earlier, leaving Thomas as Emma’s last parent.
Nathan entered her life during that period.
He helped with lawyers.
Attended hearings.
Sat beside her when she signed estate documents.
That history now became unbearable.
Marcus had found Thomas because an unrelated commercial filing in Portugal used an old corporate identifier connected to Hale Precision.
A local investigator followed the trail.
Thomas was living outside Porto under his full legal name.
No disguise.
No secret identity.
He simply had not returned.
Emma listened to Marcus explain this from a private room behind the jewelry showroom.
Her hands shook.
“Why didn’t he contact me?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Nathan, meanwhile, had been escorted away from Emma by store security after the slap.
He kept asking whether Thomas had spoken to anyone.

That question made Marcus suspicious.
Emma noticed too.
