Chapter 6 - Thomas Comes Back Without Asking for ForgivenessEmma met her father in a private conference room four weeks later.

Thomas was seventy-one.
Thinner than she remembered.
Older in ways photographs could never prepare her for.
He stood when she entered.
“Emma.”
She did not hug him.
“Why?”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
His explanation was painful because it was ordinary.
After the business dispute, he suffered severe depression and withdrew from nearly everyone.
Shame became easier than returning.
Years passed.
Then he became convinced Emma had built a better life without him.
When he finally gathered enough courage to contact Nathan, Nathan told him Emma wanted no disruption.
Thomas believed him because believing him required less courage than calling Emma directly.
“That was cowardly,” Thomas said.
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
He did not argue.
He also clarified something important.
He did not return to reclaim Hale Precision.
The estate issues would be handled legally.
“I came because Marcus said you deserved to hear from me directly.”
Emma sat across from him.
“You let another man decide whether I knew my father was alive.”
Thomas nodded.
“I did.”
No dramatic reconciliation followed.
Emma asked him to leave after forty minutes.
Then she cried in the empty conference room.
Not because she hated him.
May you like
Because both Thomas and Nathan had spent years making decisions about what Emma could supposedly handle.
Neither had asked her.
