Chapter 17 - THE AFFAIR THAT WASN’T SIMPLE

Months after the divorce, Camille asked to meet me.

I almost refused.

Then agreed.

Public restaurant.

No family.

She told me she and Adrian had kissed once.

After the Crownline discussions began.

Before my confrontation.

No sex.

I believed her.

Maybe because she had very little left to gain by minimizing.

She said:

“I wanted him.”

I appreciated that sentence more than excuses.

Then:

“I also told myself it wasn’t really cheating because his marriage was unhappy.”

I laughed.

“That’s convenient.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“I didn’t understand he was using the proposed investment and me as the same future.”

Neither had I.

Camille apologized.

Not for Adrian’s violence.

She did not cause it.

For participating emotionally in a relationship with a married man whose pregnant wife had not been told the marriage was over.

Specific.

I accepted the apology.
