Chapter 24 - GRACE ASKS WHAT DEAD WEIGHT MEANS

Grace was eleven when she found an old court transcript reference to the assault.

“Dad called you dead weight?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was angry.”

“That’s not why.”

Children improve questions with age.

I thought.

“He believed I was supposed to make his life easier because I was his wife.”

“Did you?”

“Sometimes.”

“Was that bad?”

“No. Partners help each other.”

“Then?”

“The bad part was him believing help was something he owned.”

She nodded.

Then:

“You were pregnant with me.”

“Yes.”

“Was I heavy?”

I laughed.

“Extremely.”

She looked pleased.

At least somebody enjoyed the phrase.
