Chapter 22 - THE DAY HE APOLOGIZES

Adrian apologized to me properly four years after the assault.

Not during the criminal case.

Not during divorce.

Those apologies always contained negotiation.

This one came through a co-parenting counselor.

He said:

“I hit you because you challenged the story I needed everyone to believe.”

I looked at him.

“What story?”

“That I could lose you and still keep everything your marriage gave me.”

There.

Then:

“I treated your father’s business relationship like part of your dowry.”

Ugly word.

Accurate mentality.

Then:

“And when you stopped cooperating, I thought you were taking something from me.”

“You were already leaving.”

“I know.”

“No. You were replacing me and still expected me to preserve the bridge.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

I believed he understood.

I did not forgive him into my bed.

Understanding is not reconciliation.
