Chapter 11 - DANIEL LEARNS AT THE HOSPITAL

Daniel arrived at my hospital room at 10:30 p.m.
Not to see me first.
To see Owen.
I heard shouting in the family consultation room.
Daniel:
“You knew?”
Owen:
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Silence.
“HOW MUCH?”
A nurse closed my door.
Good.
Hospitals are not wedding tribunals.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel asked permission to speak with me.
I said yes.
He entered alone.
No tuxedo jacket.
Tie gone.
Wedding band on his hand.
Married less than seven hours.
His face looked older.
“I’m sorry.”
“You did not push me.”
“No.”
“Then don’t apologize for her.”
He sat.
“Did you know about Cecily?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Two weeks.”
“Did you know Vanessa pushed her?”
“I believed Cecily.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Hard question.
“I thought Owen would.”
Daniel laughed once.
Bitter.
“Everybody thought Owen would fix it.”
True.
Then:
“Would you have told me today?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After the reception if Owen still didn’t.”
Daniel looked down.
That was my own compromise.
I had judged Owen for after the wedding while planning my own after the reception.
Why wait?
Because I was pregnant.
Because I did not want a confrontation in a ballroom.
Because I wanted Cecily to control her own disclosure where possible.
All reasonable.
Still:
I had chosen timing too.
Difference:
I was not lying about the incident.
But the realization made me less interested in moral perfection.
Daniel said:
“She married me knowing she intended to tell me later.”
I corrected:
“Owen intended to tell you later. I don’t know what Vanessa intended.”
He looked at me.
“You still care about accuracy.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because everybody’s feelings are already doing enough damage.”
He nodded.
Then took off his wedding ring.
Held it.
Did not throw it.
No cinematic symbolism.
Put it in his pocket.
May you like
He left the hospital.
He did not return to the bridal suite.
