Chapter 25 - OWEN SAYS WHY HE FROZE

Owen testified under cooperation terms.

Vanessa looked at him like she did not recognize him.

He looked worse.

The prosecutor:

“Did you see Vanessa touch Cecily?”

“Yes.”

“What did you report?”

“That I did not.”

“Why?”

“To protect her wedding.”

“From?”

“Daniel learning she had violated the boundary he set.”

“Did Vanessa know you were doing that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I told her I would keep the incident contained until after the wedding.”

Contained.

Another family word.

“Did you believe Cecily was lying?”

“No.”

“Did you believe Vanessa intended to break her wrist?”

“No.”

“Did that change whether she pushed?”

“No.”

Then the fountain.

“When champagne spilled on Vanessa, did you believe Bianca did it deliberately?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She believed Bianca was trying to provoke her into losing control in front of Daniel.”

“Was Bianca?”

“No.”

“What did you do when Vanessa followed Bianca toward the fountain?”

“I followed.”

“Why?”

“I thought they would argue.”

“Then?”

“Vanessa shoved her.”

“What did you do?”

Owen’s throat moved.

“Nothing.”

“For how long?”

“Until Marcello entered.”

“Why?”

He began crying.

Not dramatically.

Quiet.

“Because the moment I admitted what I saw, everything I had spent two weeks protecting was gone.”

The prosecutor waited.

“Your sister’s wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Her marriage?”

“Yes.”

“Your own lie?”

“Yes.”

There.

“And Bianca?”

Owen looked at me.

“I left her in the water for seventeen seconds because I was still trying to understand whether I could save the story.”

Silence.

“What story?”

“That Vanessa was not violent.”

There.

The truth.

Not:

I froze because shock.

That was partly true.

Deeper:

He froze because reality contradicted the version he had chosen.

Then defense.

“You never told Vanessa to push Bianca?”

“No.”

“Expected?”

“No.”

“Wanted Bianca injured?”

“Never.”

“Did you tell Daniel after?”

“Yes.”

“Cooperate with police?”

“Eventually.”

“Plead guilty to your own false statement?”

“Yes.”

No larger villain.

May you like

No secret mastermind.

A brother who kept fixing his sister until the fix required him not to see a pregnant wife sitting in water.
