Chapter 7 - THE FIRST SETTLEMENT

Maison Orla’s insurer offered Cecily standard workers’ compensation benefits because she was injured during work.
Separate from any claim against Vanessa.
Vanessa’s personal attorney later approached Cecily about a civil settlement.
Medical costs outside workers’ comp.
Lost freelance income.
Pain.
No admission of liability.
Confidentiality regarding settlement amount.
Normal civil practice.
Cecily declined initially.
Why?
“She still won’t say she pushed me.”
That mattered more than money.
Owen called Cecily.
Once.
The call was recorded by Cecily because her attorney advised documenting contact.
OWEN:
I’m not asking you to lie.
CECILY:
You already did.
OWEN:
I told them what I saw.
CECILY:
You saw her hands on me.
Silence.
OWEN:
Daniel cannot hear this two weeks before the wedding from somebody who hates Vanessa.
CECILY:
I do not hate your sister.
OWEN:
Then let us get through the wedding and deal with it afterward.
There.
May you like
After.
