Chapter 21 - OWEN TAKES THE SMALLER PLEA

Owen eventually accepted his own deal.
Factual admission:
He knowingly provided a materially inaccurate written statement during investigation of Cecily Park’s injury by denying he observed physical contact from Vanessa immediately before the fall.
He did so to reduce the likelihood Vanessa’s conduct would be disclosed before her wedding.
No admission of insurance theft.
No conspiracy to injure me.
No claim he knew Vanessa would shove me.
Accurate.
Plea to a misdemeanor false-statement/obstruction offense.
Probation.
Community service.
Fine.
Cooperation.
Ethics/compliance course because his job involved corporate operations.
No jail under the negotiated disposition given no record and his later correction/cooperation.
Career consequences separate.
Owen worked for a medical-device company.
Not family business.
He disclosed the conviction.
Placed on administrative review.
Kept his job after reassignment away from direct regulatory-certification responsibilities for a period.
No instant poverty.
No father destroying his career.
He told me:
“I almost wish Dad had gotten me fired.”
“Why?”
“Punishment would feel simpler.”
“Consequences are not therapy.”
He smiled sadly.
