Chapter 15 - RUBY’S BRACE COMES OFF

Six weeks after the birthday, Dr. Callahan began weaning Ruby from the brace.

His decision.

Not Lucinda’s.

Physical therapy showed improved strength.

Stability better.

Pain minimal.

First:

Brace off during controlled therapy.

Then short indoor walking.

Then longer periods.

Then stairs with supervision.

Ruby hated the process.

“Why now?”

“Because your knee is ready.”

“Cousin Lucinda said before.”

“She was wrong.”

“Why?”

“Because the doctor hadn’t said.”

That became simple enough for a child.

Then one afternoon Ruby walked from our kitchen to the garden without it.

She stopped halfway.

Looked down.

Then at me.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“I forgot.”

“The brace?”

She nodded.

“Good or bad?”

I smiled.

“Probably good.”

She kept walking.

No camera.

That mattered.

Nobody documented it for insurance.

Nobody applauded.

May you like

Nobody turned healing into evidence.

She simply forgot she had once needed help.
