Chapter 7 - MY DAUGHTER’S BIRTHDAY VIDEO

We preserved the birthday footage.
All of it.
Not because I wanted to watch.
Because evidence matters.
Thirty-four minutes before the hook, Lucinda entered the ballroom and spoke to the videographer.
Twenty-two minutes before, she watched Ruby walk from the gift table to me with the brace.
Fourteen minutes before, she whispered to her assistant.
Then the assistant shook her head.
Nine minutes before, Lucinda crouched beside Ruby and touched the brace.
Ruby pulled her leg away.
Then the party game began.
Six minutes before, I sat at the head of the table while children gathered for cake.
Lucinda looked toward the videographer twice.
Then she walked to Ruby.
The hook began.
Remove brace.
Ruby falls.
“Stop pretending you’re crippled.”
That language now had another function.
If she could make the family believe Ruby exaggerated, every future image of Ruby wearing the brace became suspect.
Then my response.
The slap.
Frosting.
My line.
The videographer captured everything.
The short clip leaked two days later.
Not from him.
A guest.
Online versions made me look like the classic Mafia father defending his daughter.
Black suit.
Bodyguards.
Terrified cousin.
Head table.
People loved it.
I hated it.
Because the first two seconds showed my daughter falling and the rest of the internet discussion became about me.
Was Salvatore a badass?
Was the slap deserved?
Was this staged?
Was the family really Mafia?
Ruby’s medical device became set dressing in a story about male power.
I asked our communications team to issue one statement:
A child’s prescribed medical brace was removed without authorization, causing a fall. The family is cooperating with appropriate medical, legal, and organizational reviews. We will not discuss the child’s medical details publicly.
No heroic father language.
No threats.
No Lucinda character assassination.
Then I did something my grandfather would have considered incomprehensible.
I told my security team:
“No one contacts people who criticize us online.”
Anthony stared.
“Wasn’t planning to.”
“I know.”
“Then why say it?”
“Because apparently I still need to hear myself say what kind of family this is.”
May you like
He nodded.
Fair.
