Chapter 25 - LUCINDA’S FINAL CONVERSATION WITH RUBY

Lucinda was seventy-one when she became seriously ill.

Cancer.

Long treatment.

Ruby was thirty-five.

She visited.

Her choice.

Lucinda looked smaller.

No diamonds.

No formal gown.

Hospital cardigan.

Ruby sat beside her.

They talked for almost an hour.

I know only what Ruby later told me.

Lucinda said:

“I used to think strength meant tolerating pain.”

Ruby answered:

“Sometimes strength is saying it hurts.”

Lucinda laughed.

“Your doctor told me that in longer words.”

Then:

“I’m sorry I made your body into evidence.”

That was the best apology she ever gave.

Ruby held her hand.

Not because history demanded forgiveness.

May you like

Because she wanted to.

Lucinda died six months later.
