Chapter 19 - LUCINDA’S FIRST APOLOGY

Lucinda wrote Ruby a letter after one year.
Bad letter.
I did not give it to Ruby.
It said:
I only wanted you to believe you were stronger than the brace.
No.
That still made her intentions noble.
Second letter:
I made a mistake because I was frightened about the club.
Closer.
Still centered Lucinda.
Third came after therapy.
I took off your brace even after you told me not to. I knew your doctor wanted you to wear it. I wanted people to see you walking without it because I was afraid of what your injury would mean for me. I was wrong.
There.
Then:
You never had to prove you were strong for me.
Good.
Ruby was nine by then.
Her therapist read it with her.
Ruby asked:
“Do I answer?”
May you like
“No.”
She did not.
