Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT BETRAYAL

“Adrian,” she said. Her voice was calm. Confident. No fear left.
“Where are you?”
“Close enough to see the smoke when it starts,” she said. “You made a mistake. Throwing me out. You should have listened to me when I told you to leave well enough alone.”
“You hurt my son.”
“I was doing my job. Following orders. And now… you have forced the Guardian’s hand.”
“Tell him we have the evidence,” I said. “We will release everything. Every name. Every crime. If he comes near this cottage… we destroy his empire.”
Vanessa laughed. Cold and sharp.
“You think he cares about the evidence? He expected you to leak it. He planned for it. He let Claire steal it because he thought she would never have the courage to use it. But you… you pushed too hard.”
My stomach dropped.
“Planned for it?”
“The evidence you have… is incomplete,” she said. “Claire hid the most important files somewhere else. And the Guardian knows it. He knows you cannot destroy him completely. And he knows you will not risk Noah’s life to finish the job.”
She paused.
“Come out. Bring the drive. Bring the boy. Or watch this place burn. With all of you inside it.”
The call ended.
I turned to Thomas and Marcus.
“She says the evidence is incomplete. That Claire hid the most important files somewhere else.”
Thomas went pale.
“She did. She told me once. The master file. The one that names everyone. Including the highest levels. She said she would never write it down. She said she would keep it only in her head… until the day she was certain it was safe to reveal. She never trusted anyone enough to write it down.”
“Not even me?” I asked.
“Not even you. To protect you. If you were captured… you couldn’t reveal what you didn’t know.”
I gripped the edge of the table.
“So we have enough to shake them… but not enough to end it. He survives. And he will keep coming.”
“Exactly,” Thomas said. “Which means we cannot win by leaking files alone. We need the master file. And the only person who knew where it was… is Claire.”
“She left clues,” I said slowly. “She left notes. Riddles. Things only I would understand. She knew I would find the rest when I was ready.”
I thought of everything she’d left. The photograph. The letter. The book of poetry. The heart in the concrete.
And then I remembered something she’d said to me months before she died. We were sitting right here in this very cottage—we’d visited once, as a family, a secret trip she’d arranged.
She’d taken my hand and looked out at the lake.
*“Everything I am… everything I have hidden… it’s all for Noah. And when the time comes… the answer is where we began.”*
“Where we began,” I whispered.
“What?” Thomas asked.
“The place we were married. The church. The small town where we met. She said the answer is where we began.”
I looked at them.
“She hid the master file there. Buried or hidden or placed somewhere only I would know. She kept the most dangerous truth… closest to home.”
Marcus grabbed his coat.
“Then we have to go. Before Vanessa reports back. Before the Guardian realizes what we are looking for.”
“And Noah?” Thomas asked.
“We leave him here,” I said. “Hidden. Safe. Guarded. If we take him… we lead them straight to the prize. If we leave him… they will never find him. Not in that room. Not unless they know exactly where to look.”
I walked back to the hidden door. Opened it. Knelt beside my son.
“Noah… Daddy has to go away for a little while. But Grandpa Thomas will stay here with you. And you will be safe. I promise.”
Noah looked at me. He didn’t cry. He just held up his hand.
“Mommy said you would have to go. She said to give you this.”
He pressed something into my palm.
A small, folded note.
I stared at it. Claire had given this to him. Months ago. Before she died. She’d told him to give it to me when the time came.

I unfolded it.
*Go to the place where we said our vows. Look where the light touches the stone. And remember… I never left you.*
