Chapter 14 - THE APARTMENT ABOVE THE BOOKSTORE

I drove back to the city alone. At night. Changing routes three times. Watching for tails.

Claire’s letter had given me the address. A quiet street in the oldest part of town. An independent bookstore on the ground floor. A narrow staircase leading up to one apartment.

I parked two blocks away. Walked the rest. Kept to shadows.

The bookstore lights were off. But there was a faint glow in the upper windows.

I climbed the stairs slowly. Stood before the door. Knocked once. Then twice. Then once. Exactly as Claire had described.

The door opened.

A young woman stood there. Dark hair. Dark eyes. A face so like Claire’s it made my heart ache. She held a letter opener in her hand. Ready.

“Elena?”

She studied me. Carefully. Searching my face.

“Adrian?”

I nodded.

She stepped aside.

“Come in. Quickly.”

The apartment was small. Warm. Books everywhere. Photographs on the walls. Many of them Claire. Elena standing beside her. Laughing. Happy.

Elena closed the door. Locked it. Bolted it.

“I have been waiting,” she said. “Claire told me you would come. She said if anything ever happened to her… you would find your way here.”

She walked to a small safe in the corner. Twirled the dial. Opened it. Pulled out a thick stack of papers and a flash drive.

“She said to give this to you. Only you. No one else. Not even Marcus.”

I took it. Held it tight.

“Claire knew Marcus would betray us?”

“She suspected,” Elena said. “She said loyalty can be a chain. Even when it binds you to something terrible. Marcus could never break free of the Guardian. Claire knew that. She loved him anyway. But she would not trust him with everything.”

She sat down on the edge of the chair.

“I was there the night Claire died. She came to me. Weak. In pain. She told me everything. She said the Guardian had poisoned her. Slowly. Over months. To take back what she stole. To make sure she died before she could expose him.”

My hands clenched into fists.

Poisoned. Murdered. All along.

“She knew,” Elena said quietly. “She knew she was dying. That is why she hid everything. That is why she planned every step. For Noah. For you. She gave her life to buy you time.”

I looked down at the files in my hands. Hundreds of pages. Names. Dates. Bank accounts. Medical records. Proof of the poison. Proof of the murder. Proof of everything.

“We have him,” I said. “Everything. Every crime. Every secret.”

Elena’s face was grave.

“We have the truth. But he has the power. And he has people everywhere. He will not let these files be seen. He will kill anyone who tries.”

“Then we do not give him a choice,” I said. “We leak it all. Every page. Every name. Simultaneously. To every journalist. Every court. Every government agency. He cannot silence them all.”

“And Noah?” Elena asked. “When he realizes he has lost everything… he will come for the boy. To hurt him. To punish us.”

I thought of Noah. Safe in the hidden room. Holding his mother’s photograph.

“Then we will be ready. We will meet him with the truth. And we will make him answer for what he did. To Claire. To us. To everyone he ever hurt.”

Elena stood up. Walked to the window. Looked down at the street.

“Adrian… someone is watching the building. A car. Parked across the street. It has been there since you arrived.”

I walked to her side. Looked down.

A dark sedan. Two men inside. Watching.

They had followed me. Not from the cottage. From the moment I left.

Marcus had told them. Or Vanessa. Or the Guardian himself.

I turned back to Elena.

“They know we are here. They know you have the files.”

Elena did not flinch. She reached into a drawer and pulled out a small device.

“Claire gave this to me. A signal jammer. And a direct line to people who can help. People who have been waiting for this evidence.”

She pressed a button.

“Help is coming. But we have to be gone before they get here.”
