Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO FOLLOWED ME

I gripped the steering wheel tight.

I didn’t speed. I didn’t brake suddenly. I drove exactly the speed limit. Turned where I was supposed to turn. Stayed calm on the surface while my heart hammered wildly against my ribs.

The car behind me stayed at a distance. Far enough back to be unremarkable. Close enough to never lose sight of me.

I pressed the speaker button on my phone and called Marcus.

“Someone is following me,” I said quietly. “Dark sedan. No plates I can see. Half a block back.”

“Where are you?”

“Two miles from your office.”

“Don’t come here,” Marcus said instantly. “They know where I am. If you lead them to me… everything is lost.”

“Where do I go?”

“Head toward the old harbor. There are narrow streets. Construction zones. Places to lose them. I’ll meet you there. At the warehouse on Pier 17. Go now. And Adrian… don’t let them corner you.”

The call ended.

I turned without signaling. Down a side street. Then another.

The car stayed with me.

I accelerated. Swerved through a narrow alley. Cut through a parking lot.

Still there.

My hands were sweating. The flash drive felt heavy in my pocket. Claire’s entire life’s work. The truth. The only thing that could bring them down. And if they took it from me… she died for nothing.

I thought of Noah. Waiting for me at home. Asleep. Safe. For now.

I gripped the wheel harder.

I reached the harbor. Turned onto Pier 17. Saw the old warehouse looming ahead. Dark. Brick. Double steel doors.

I pulled up fast. Jumped out.

The car behind me screeched to a halt. Two men stepped out. Big. Broad-shouldered. Wearing dark clothes. No words. They started walking toward me.

I pulled the flash drive from my pocket. Clutched it tight.

Marcus stepped out from the shadow of the warehouse. He held something in his hand. A small device.

“Give it to me,” he said. “Now.”

I hesitated. Just for a second.

“Hurry, Adrian!”

I handed him the flash drive.

The men broke into a run.

Marcus turned and shoved the drive into a hidden slot in the warehouse wall. A heavy metal door slid open. He pushed me inside. Followed me in. Slammed it shut and locked it just as fists pounded against the steel from outside.

We stood there in darkness. Breathing hard. Listening to the shouting from outside.

“They can’t get in,” Marcus said. “This place is built like a fortress. Claire knew about it. She told me to bring us here if it ever came to this.”

Light flickered on.

We stood in a small, concrete room. Shelves lined the walls. Monitors sat on a table. Weapons locked in a cabinet.

I looked at Marcus.

“She told you about this place?”

“She helped me secure it,” he said. “Years ago. She said one day we would need somewhere safe to plan. Somewhere they couldn’t reach us.”

He walked to the wall and pulled the drive out. Held it in his palm.

“Everything is on here?”

“Everything,” I said. “Names. Records. Bank accounts. Proof of every crime. Claire wrote that this drive alone can put hundreds of people in prison. Including the Guardian.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Then we have to be careful. If they get this… they destroy it. And then they come for Noah. And then they come for us.”

He set the drive down on the table.

“We make copies. Hide them in different places. Send them to trusted contacts. Journalists. Judges. People who cannot be bought. But we do it slowly. Carefully. One wrong move and they silence us before anyone sees the truth.”

I looked at the monitors. One showed the outside of the warehouse. The two men were still there. Talking into phones. Taking pictures of the building.

“They know we’re here,” I said.

“Let them watch,” Marcus said. “They won’t break in. Not yet. They want to know who else is with us. They want to know who else has seen the evidence.”

He turned to me.

“Adrian… there is something else. Something Claire told me but never wrote down. She said that if the Guardian sends men personally… it means he isn’t just after the evidence anymore. He’s after Noah. Because he knows that once the truth goes public… he will never be allowed near the boy again.”

“Then we hide Noah,” I said. “Somewhere safe. Somewhere they will never find him.”

Marcus looked at me. His expression was grave.

“Claire already arranged that. A safe house. Far away. People she trusts. People who have been waiting for her signal. But to get him there… we have to get past every roadblock. Every watcher. Every man they have in this city.”

He paused.

“And we have less than forty-eight hours. The Guardian has given an order. Bring Noah to him. By any means necessary. By dawn the day after tomorrow.”

My blood ran cold.

“Forty-eight hours?”

“Once that time passes… they stop asking. They start taking. No warning. No negotiation. They will tear this city apart to find him.”

I thought of Noah. His small hands. His quiet voice. The way he held his mother’s photograph like it was a lifeline.

“Then we leave tonight,” I said. “Now. Before they know where he is.”

Marcus nodded.

“I have a car ready. Papers. Identities. Everything Claire prepared. But Adrian… once we leave… there is no coming back. Not until they are defeated. Not until it is safe.”

I looked at the flash drive on the table. At Claire’s letter in my pocket. At the monitors showing armed men waiting outside.

Claire had chosen me to protect our son. She’d trusted me with the truth. With the evidence. With Noah.

I would not fail her.

“Let’s go,” I said. “We get Noah. And we disappear.”
