Chapter 9 - THE GUARDIAN’S RESPONSE

The effect was immediate and explosive.

Millions of dollars in payments traced directly to the Guardian’s private accounts. Payments from criminals. From foreign governments. From companies that didn’t exist.

The media erupted. Politicians scrambled to distance themselves. Members of The Circle began disappearing. Fleeing. Trying to save themselves.

The Guardian’s empire was cracking.

But so was his patience.

At dawn, another message arrived. This one different. Handwritten. In a style that matched the signature on the back of Claire’s birth certificate.

*Bring me the boy. Bring me the evidence. And I will let you live. Refuse… and every secret Claire ever kept will be used against her son.*

I stared at the words.

“He would use his own great-grandson as a weapon against us?”

“He would do anything to remain in power,” Thomas said. “He never loved Claire. He never loved Noah. He loves only control. And he will destroy anyone who stands in his way. Even his own blood.”

Marcus paced the room.

“He is desperate. Desperate men make mistakes. But they also make terrible choices. He may order the cottage burned. Attacked. He may send an army.”

“Then we are ready,” I said.

We moved Noah into the hidden room beneath the cottage Claire had designed for exactly this purpose. Stocked with food. Water. Blankets. Books. A radio. Safe. Hidden. Impenetrable.

“Stay here, baby,” I told him. “No matter what you hear. No matter what happens. Do not come out until I come for you.”

Noah looked at me with wide, solemn eyes. He clutched his photograph.

“Will you be safe, Daddy?”

“I will be careful. And I will come back. I promise.”

He nodded. Trusted me. As children trust their parents blindly.

I closed the door. Locked it.

Then I joined Thomas and Marcus upstairs. We stood by the windows. Watching the road. Waiting.

The Guardian had given us a deadline. Dawn.

It was past dawn.

He was late.

Which meant he had something worse planned than a simple attack.

“He isn’t coming himself,” Thomas said suddenly. “He will send someone he knows Claire would never hurt. Someone she trusted.”

Before I could ask who… my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

May you like

A voice I knew. A voice I had heard on the recordings. A voice that made my blood turn to ice.

Vanessa.
