Chapter 8 - THE FIRST LEAK

We spent the first day copying the evidence.
Thomas had equipment hidden beneath the cottage. Computers. Encryption. Secure servers. Everything Claire had arranged for years ago.
We selected the safest, least explosive information first. Names of lower-ranking members. Records of bribes. Proof of corruption in local government. Nothing that would reveal the full extent of what we held. Nothing that would make them panic and lash out blindly.
We sent it to three trusted journalists. To independent investigators. To people Claire had identified as honest and unreachable.
By evening, the news began to spread.
Reports appeared online. Quiet at first. Then louder. Names being called into question. Officials stepping down. Investigations opening.
The Circle was shaken.
But so was the danger.
That night, Marcus received a message. Sent to a dead drop location. Written in code only Claire and he had known.
*Return the boy. Surrender the evidence. Or the people you love begin to fall.*
I read the words and felt a cold hand close around my chest.
“They know we are leaking it,” I said.
“They know,” Thomas said. “And they are angry. Threats are all they have left. But they will not stop with words. Next comes action.”
He was right.
By morning, reports came in. The journalists we’d contacted had received threats. Investigators were being pulled off the cases. Witnesses were disappearing.
The Guardian was fighting back. Using every weapon he had. Power. Money. Influence. Fear.
“He is trying to silence the truth before it grows,” Marcus said. “He knows that if the evidence spreads further… he loses control over his own people. They will turn on him to save themselves.”
“Then we leak more,” I said. “Bank records. Transfers. Payments. Proof of money flowing directly to the Guardian himself.”
“That will expose him completely,” Thomas warned. “And it will make him desperate. He will stop at nothing. He may order anyone killed. Including us.”
“Claire died for this truth,” I said. “She gave her life to build this evidence. We cannot hide it out of fear. We have to show the world exactly who he is.”
Thomas looked at me. Saw the resolve in my face. Then nodded.
“Then we strike at his wealth. His power base. The thing he values most.”

We spent all day preparing. Encrypting. Sending. Hiding backup copies in a dozen different locations. If one was found… others remained.
By midnight, the second wave went out.
