Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE THAT BROKE MY HEART

I stood frozen.

Marcus stepped in front of me. His hand went to the weapon at his belt. But there were too many of them. Too many guns. Too many eyes watching every move.

“Hand it over, Adrian,” Vanessa said. “Give me the drive. And I promise… the boy will be unharmed.”

“How do you know we were coming here?” I demanded. “No one knew. Not even Thomas.”

Vanessa just smiled.

“Someone knew. Someone you trust. Someone who told you exactly what you wanted to hear.”

My blood ran cold.

Claire’s note flashed in my mind. The final name on this list will break your heart.

I looked at Vanessa. Then at the men surrounding us. And then I turned to Marcus.

He stood perfectly still. Not raising his weapon. Not reaching for it.

Slowly, Marcus lowered his hands to his sides. He looked at me. And the look in his eyes… was not fear. It was regret.

“Adrian…” he said softly.

The world tilted.

“You,” I whispered.

“I never wanted it to be this way,” Marcus said. His voice was steady. Calm. As if he were explaining a simple legal matter. “Claire knew. She always knew. That is why she kept the truth from you until now. That is why she wrote that warning.”

“You were her lawyer. Her friend. For years.”

“I was also his,” Marcus said. “The Guardian raised me. Saved me. Made me everything I am. I owed him everything. Until I met Claire. Until I saw what he truly was.”

“Then why?” My voice cracked. “Why bring us to the cottage? Why help us? Why lead us here?”

“Because I was trying to save you both,” Marcus said. “I tried to convince the Guardian to let Noah go. To let you go. But he would not listen. And then… I realized there was only one way to end this without anyone dying. To give him what he wants. And in exchange… he signs a binding agreement. He leaves you and Noah alone. Forever.”

“You made a deal with him?”

“To protect you!” Marcus insisted. “Claire is dead. I cannot bring her back. But I can keep her son safe. That is all I have ever wanted.”

“And the evidence?” I asked. “The master file? The truth?”

“Becomes a weapon,” Marcus said. “If you use it… hundreds die. Innocent people. Good people. And the Guardian will destroy everything before he lets it be revealed. Including you. Including Noah. Is that what Claire would have wanted? Blood? War?”

He stepped closer.

“Give me the drive, Adrian. Let me make the trade. Let me end this peacefully. For Claire. For Noah.”

I stood there. The drive burned in my pocket. Claire’s final warning echoing in my head. The final name will break your heart.

It was Marcus.

The man she had trusted most. The man she had sent me to. The man who had stood beside me through every terrible moment.

Claire had known. She had suspected. But she had loved him anyway. And she had left me to make the choice.

I looked at Vanessa. At the guns. At the men waiting.

I looked at Marcus. At the genuine pain in his eyes.

And I knew. If I gave him the drive… Claire’s death had been for nothing. The truth would be buried. The Guardian would remain powerful. He would come for Noah the moment it suited him.

But if I refused… we died right here. On this hill. Claire’s secret lost forever. And Noah would be taken anyway.

I pulled the drive slowly from my pocket. Held it out.

Marcus reached for it.

“Claire trusted you,” I said quietly. “And you betrayed her.”

“I am trying to save her son,” Marcus said.

“Then open it,” I told him. “Read the final name. Read what she wrote about you. Before you make a choice you will regret forever.”

Marcus hesitated. His fingers brushed mine. Closed around the drive.

He looked down at it. Then back at me.

“Step aside,” Vanessa called out. “The deal is done.”

Marcus looked at me one last time.

“Take him,” Marcus said. “Safely. No harm.”

Men moved forward. Seized my arms. Held me tight.

Vanessa stepped forward. Snatched the drive from Marcus’s hand.

“Thank you, Marcus,” she said coldly. “The Guardian will be pleased.”

She turned and walked away. The men released me and followed.

I stood there in the moonlight. With Marcus. Alone.

He stared at his hands. Empty.

“I did it to save you,” he whispered.

“You just handed the most dangerous weapon on earth to the man who killed her,” I said. “Claire knew it was you. That is why she hid the truth. That is why she wrote that warning. She knew you would choose him over her. Every single time.”

Marcus flinched.

“I will get it back,” he said. “I will fix this.”

May you like

“No,” I told him. “You cannot. Not anymore. From this moment… you are on his side. And I am on mine.”

I turned and walked away. Left him standing there beneath the moon. The man I had trusted. The man Claire had warned me about. The betrayal that hurt worse than any wound.
