Chapter 4 - THE SEARCH BEGINS

I drove home in silence.
My mind was racing. Everything I’d ever believed about Claire had shifted beneath my feet. She hadn’t been just a woman I’d met and fallen in love with. She’d been running from something enormous. Something powerful. Something that had finally caught up with us.
And she’d known it would.
She’d prepared. She’d left clues. She’d trusted me to finish what she started.
I walked into the house. It was quiet. Noah was still asleep in my bed.
I sat on the edge of the mattress and pulled out the envelope. Spread everything across the quilt beside him.
The letter. The keys. The photograph of Claire and the Guardian. And the note she’d written on the back of her own picture.
*Trust no one.*
Claire had always loved puzzles. She used to leave little notes around the house for me to find. Hidden in books. Taped inside cupboard doors. Slips of paper with riddles, or dates, or just words that made sense only to me.
She’d told me once that secrets should be kept where only the people who love you know where to look.
I looked around the bedroom. At the furniture. The pictures on the walls. The bookshelf. The bed.
This was our home. Every room held memories. Every object had a story.
If she hid something… she’d hidden it where I would find it when I was ready.
I stood up and walked to the bookshelf. Ran my fingers along the spines. Books we’d read together. Books Noah loved. And there, right in the middle, was the book Claire had been reading the week before she died.
A book of poetry. She’d marked a page.
I pulled it out. Opened it to the marked page.
There was a line underlined in blue ink.
*Home is the safest place for what you love.*
And beneath it, in her handwriting: Where we promised to build ours.
I closed my eyes.
Where we promised to build ours.
The day we signed the papers on this house. We’d stood in the empty living room and Claire had knelt down and pressed her hand into the wet cement of the foundation. She’d drawn a heart. And inside it, she’d written three things: C + A + N. Claire, Adrian, Noah.
My breath caught.
I grabbed the keys from the envelope. One of them was small. Brass. Old. Nothing like the keys to the house or the car.
I walked downstairs. Outside. Around to the side of the house where the foundation was laid.
There it was. The heart. Our initials. Weathered now, but still clear.
And right beneath the N… there was a small metal plate set into the concrete. Locked.
My hands shook as I knelt down. Inserted the brass key. Turned it.
It clicked.
The plate lifted up.
Inside, set into a hollow space beneath the concrete, was a small metal box.
I pulled it out. Set it on the grass. Opened the lid.
Inside was a single, sealed letter. And a small, silver flash drive.
No note. No explanation. Just Claire’s handwriting on the envelope.
May you like
*For Adrian. Only when it is too late for me to tell you myself.*
I sat there on the grass in the moonlight, holding that letter. Afraid to open it. Afraid of what I would read. Because I already knew. Whatever secrets she kept… they were about to change everything.
