Chapter 15 - THE MOMENT I THOUGHT I LOST EVERYTHING

The door crashed open before we could move.

Men poured up the stairs. Heavy boots. Shouts.

Elena grabbed my arm. Pulled me toward a window that opened onto a fire escape.

“Go!”

“Not without you!”

“I will follow! Go now!”

I climbed out. Heard glass shatter behind me. Heard Elena’s voice raised in anger. Heard men shouting.

I scrambled down the metal steps. Jumped the last flight. Hit the ground running.

I clutched the files tight against my chest. The only copy. The only truth.

I ran through alleyways. Turned corners. Ducked into doorways. My heart hammering so hard I could barely breathe.

They had Elena.

They had found us faster than we could escape.

And now… they had the only witness who could prove how Claire died.

I collapsed in the shadow of a building blocks away. Leaned against brick. Gasping for air.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

A text message. Unknown number.

*You left something behind. The girl is safe. For now. Surrender the files by dawn. Or she dies. And then we find the boy. And we take him. And you will watch while we turn him into something you will not recognize.*

I stared at the words.

They had Elena. They were using her to force my hand.

If I surrendered… Claire died for nothing. Elena dies anyway. Noah is taken. Destroyed.

If I refuse… Elena dies. And they hunt us all down.

I looked at the files in my hand. The truth. The justice Claire deserved. The protection Noah needed.

But Elena… she was family. She was Claire’s blood. She had risked everything for us.

I could not let her die.

I called the number.

It rang once.

Vanessa answered.

“Adrian.”

“Let Elena go,” I said. “She has nothing to do with this.”

“She has everything to do with this. She has what belongs to us. Just like you do.”

“What do you want?”

“Meet me. Alone. At the old warehouse on the waterfront. Midnight. Bring the files. Bring the drive. Exchange them. For her. One for one.”

“And if I come alone?”

“Then she lives. If you bring anyone… she dies before you cross the threshold.”

The call ended.

I stood there in the dark. Files in my arms. Elena’s life in my hands. Noah waiting for me miles away.

I had no choice.

I would go. I would make the exchange. And then… I would find another way. Another plan. Another path.

Claire had built layers. I had only found some. There must be more. More people. More secrets. More ways to bring him down.

But tonight… I choose Elena.

I stood up. Wiped sweat from my face.

I took the top page from the files. The summary. The names. The charges. And I tore it out. Folded it. Put it in my pocket.

Then I walked to a mailbox. Dropped a copy of the most critical pages inside. Sealed. Addressed to three different journalists. Sent from a random street corner.

May you like

If I did not return… someone would find them. Someone would know.

Then I drove toward the waterfront. Toward midnight. Toward the exchange.
