Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

I drove back to the cottage alone. In silence.
Everything had changed. The drive was gone. Marcus was lost to us. The Guardian held the evidence Claire had died to protect.
And yet… I still had the envelope. The letter Claire had placed beside the drive. The one Vanessa had not bothered to take.
I walked inside. Closed the door. Sat at the kitchen table beneath the light. Opened the envelope.
Claire’s handwriting filled every page. More personal this time. More raw.
*My dearest Adrian,*
*If you are reading this… then Marcus has betrayed us. I wrote this because I knew he would. Not out of evil. But out of loyalty to the man who raised him. He cannot see past his debt. He will choose peace over truth every time. And the Guardian will use that to destroy us.*
*But I did not put all my trust in one drive. Or one man. Or one plan. I left the master file where no one would ever think to look. I left it in the one place the Guardian would never touch. His own family.*
*There is a girl. Her name is Elena. She is my cousin. The Guardian’s own great-niece. She ran away years ago. Saw what he truly was. She has been hiding the truth for me. Protecting it. Protecting us.*
*Find her. She lives in the small apartment above the bookstore in the city. She has the full file. Everything. Names. Proof. Testimonies. Use it wisely. Use it to end him. And tell her… I am sorry I could not say goodbye.*
*One last thing, my love. The Guardian is not just afraid of the truth. He is afraid of Noah. Because the prophecy says that one day… the heir will take the Guardian’s place. But not as a tyrant. As a savior. He fears that Noah will become everything he is not. Good. Kind. Just.*
*That is why he wants him. To break him. To turn him into a weapon. To erase the goodness before it grows.*
*Do not let him win. Protect Noah. And remember… blood does not make a family. Love does.*
*Always,*
*Claire.*
I folded the letter slowly. Set it down.
Elena. A cousin. Someone I had never heard of. Hidden right in the city. With the full file.
Claire had planned for everything. Even betrayal. Even Marcus. Even me.
She had built layer upon layer of protection. Just in case.
Thomas walked into the room. Saw my face.
“Marcus?”
I nodded.
“Claire knew. She left another way. Another file. Another person we can trust.”
I stood up.
“I have to go back to the city. Find Elena. Get the real evidence.”
Thomas looked at me.
“It is a trap. If Marcus betrayed you… the Guardian will be watching every person Claire ever knew. Every address. Every name.”
“Maybe,” I said. “But Claire trusted her. And I trust Claire.”
I walked to the hidden room. Opened the door. Knelt beside Noah.
“I have to go away again, Noah. But I will come back. I promise. And Grandpa Thomas will stay here with you. You will be safe.”
Noah looked at me. He reached out and touched my face.
“Daddy… why do the bad people want us?”
I held his hand.
“Because we have something they will never have. Love.”
Noah thought about that. Then he nodded.
“Okay. Then we have more than them.”
My throat tightened.
“Yes. We have more than them.”
I kissed his forehead. Stepped back. Closed the door. Locked it.
I looked at Thomas.
“Keep him safe. If I do not return in twenty-four hours… take him away. Somewhere no one knows. Raise him. Tell him I loved him. And tell him about his mother.”
“Adrian…”
“Promise me.”
May you like
Thomas nodded slowly.
“I promise.”
